The Primary Curriculum, for children ages 3 through 6,
involves developmental hands-on material. In
the practical life area, children are given
opportunities to perfect their small muscle
coordination, to lengthen their attention spans, and to
learn skills which aid them in gaining independence.
Sensorial materials help children to distinguish,
categorize, and relate new information to what they
already know. In the math area, children gain a strong
foundation in the decimal system, hands-on experience
with the four operations (addition, subtraction,
multiplication, and division), and some memorization of
math facts. In language, children initially learn the
phonetic sounds of the letters of the alphabet as their
hands learn the shapes of each letter. They usually
begin writing and reading during their final year in the
primary class. |
